Elizabeth Slayton and Soren Whited are Boston-based artists and mother and son. This is their first exhibition together.

Soren Whited

My drawings begin with a singular element—a line, a shape, a pattern—that establishes an initial compositional tension. Through iterative processes of repetition, variation, and responses to irregularities, I build structures that both resolve and preserve this tension. The works are visual records of an additive, cumulative process that never fully settles.

My work moves in cycles, from realistic detail to images of open, unbounded space. These paintings focus on the latter.  All of my work is about light—how it touches onion skin, catches the bend of a magnolia petal or the foam at the tip of an ocean wave. Sometimes it radiates from a distant place; at other times, it emerges from an inner space. The paintings remain open, resisting definition.
