Move past basic stencil techniques to discover how these tools can create depth, rhythm, and unexpected visual relationships in your paintings. Learn to combine handcut and found stencils with brushwork and color layering.
Key Teaching Points:
Making vs. finding stencils - cutting your own from cardboard, plastic, or paper vs. using found objects like leaves, mesh, or household items
Layering techniques - building up multiple stenciled layers with different colors and opacity levels
Positive and negative space - using stencils to create both marks and protected areas
Integration with freehand work - how to make stenciled elements feel organic rather than imposed
Tool variations - sponges, brushes, spray bottles, palette knives for different textures through stencils
Scale relationships - combining large and small stenciled elements for visual interest
Students will learn to create their own stencils, develop color layering strategies, and integrate stenciled elements seamlessly with painterly techniques to create dynamic, textured compositions.
