Introduction to Brush Making: A Workshop with Paul Wisotzky

Description:
In this fun three-hour workshop, you will learn how to make brushes for decorating pottery. Brushes can be used to apply slips, underglazes, glazes, oxide washes, and wax resist. We will use several types of animal hair – deer, coyote, fox, skunk – for the brush heads and bamboo for the handles. Materials will be provided to adorn the brushes and add loop handles. Instruction will also include how to make your own brush handles with clay. All materials are provided and you will leave the workshop with several brushes you made yourself to add to your decorating tool kit along with the skills to continue making your own. No experience necessary. There is a materials fee of $5 per brush payable to the instructor via Venmo, credit card or cash at the conclusion of the workshop.

Materials Provided:
Bamboo, tools, various animal furs, etc.

Who It's For:
Open to all levels—ideal for ceramic artists and anyone would would enjoy using a custom paint brush in their art practice. This workshop is appropriate for students 18 years old and up.

Instructor bio: Paul Wisotzky is a studio potter and educator from Truro, Massachusetts. He makes functional pottery from porcelain and stoneware and fires his work in soda and reduction atmospheres at his studio Blueberry Lane Pottery. Paul is an instructor at the Harvard University Ceramics Program and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and conducts workshops nationally. He is a founder and co-producer of SodaPosium a national educational gathering and celebration of soda firing. As an Open Studio Resident at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Paul developed a process of digitally designing and fabricating sponge stamps using graphic design software and a laser cutter. This process was featured in Ceramics Monthly Magazine and an educational video available on CLAYflicks. Additional artist residencies include Penland School of Craft and Red Lodge Clay Center.

Materials: Important: Students should plan to pay Paul directly for each brush they make at the workshop. $5/brush. Venmo, credit card, check, and cash accepted.
